Heart Check-up in Amravati: Which Tests and When

By Dr. Pavan Agrawal, Interventional Cardiologist, Amravati · Updated · 2 min read

A heart check-up looks at your risk of heart disease and checks how your heart is working. Which tests you need depends on your age, symptoms, family history and existing conditions, and your doctor decides this.

Who should think about a heart check-up

  • Anyone with chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations or fainting
  • People with high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol
  • People with a family history of early heart disease
  • Smokers and people who use tobacco or gutka
  • Adults over 40, even without symptoms

Tests your doctor may suggest

  • Medical history and examination: symptoms, medicines, family history, blood pressure, pulse and weight
  • ECG: a quick recording of the heart's electrical activity
  • Echocardiography (echo): an ultrasound picture of the heart muscle and valves
  • TMT (treadmill test): an ECG recorded while you walk on a treadmill
  • Blood tests: blood sugar and cholesterol, and others when needed

You may not need every test. Your doctor chooses tests based on your situation. Read more in ECG, Echo and TMT: which heart test do you need and heart health after 40.

Before you go

  • Carry your old reports and a list of your medicines
  • Note when your symptoms start and what makes them better or worse
  • Ask the hospital team whether any test needs fasting or special preparation

For chest pain that is severe, spreading to the arm or jaw, or comes with sweating or breathlessness, do not wait for a check-up. Treat it as an emergency and call 112 or the hospital straight away.
