Heart attack warning signs: when to call for help
Chest pain is the best-known sign of a heart attack, but it is not the only one. Learn which signals need urgent help.
A heart attack happens when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked. Treatment works best when it starts early, so recognising the signs quickly can save heart muscle and lives.
Common warning signs
Pressure, tightness, heaviness or burning in the centre of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or comes and goes.
Pain or discomfort spreading to the left arm, both arms, shoulder, neck, jaw or back.
Shortness of breath, with or without chest discomfort.
Cold sweat, nausea or sudden lightheadedness.
Unusual tiredness or a feeling that something is seriously wrong.
Some people, including women, older adults and people with diabetes, may have milder or unusual symptoms such as breathlessness, indigestion-like discomfort or extreme fatigue, without strong chest pain.
What to do
Call 112 or the hospital emergency number, 95116 13365, straight away.
Sit down, stay calm and avoid any exertion.
Do not drive yourself. Ask someone to take you or wait for the ambulance.
Do not wait to see whether the symptoms pass.

Coronary angiography and angioplasty: what to expect
A simple guide to the test that looks at the heart's arteries and the procedure that opens a blocked one.
Coronary angiography is a test that shows whether the arteries supplying the heart are narrowed or blocked. Angioplasty is a procedure that opens a narrowed artery, often by placing a small mesh tube called a stent.
How angiography works
A thin, flexible tube called a catheter is passed through an artery, usually at the wrist or groin, and guided to the heart. A contrast dye is injected and X-ray images show the arteries. The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, and most people stay awake.
How angioplasty works
If a blockage is found, a tiny balloon at the tip of the catheter can widen the artery. A stent may then be placed to help keep it open.
Before and after
Tell your doctor about allergies, kidney problems, diabetes and every medicine you take.
Follow the instructions you are given about eating and drinking before the procedure.
Expect a period of rest and monitoring afterwards. Recovery time depends on your condition and the access site.
Take your prescribed medicines exactly as advised and attend your follow-up visits.
Your cardiologist will explain whether either test or procedure is right for you.
