Preventive Cardiology: How to Prevent Heart Disease

By Dr. Pavan Agrawal, Interventional Cardiologist, Amravati · Updated · 2 min read

Preventive cardiology aims to stop heart disease before it starts, or stop it getting worse. It combines risk checks with daily habits.

What preventive care includes

  • Measuring blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol regularly
  • Risk assessment based on age, family history and habits
  • ECG, echo or TMT when your doctor advises them
  • Advice on diet, exercise, weight, sleep and quitting tobacco

Habits that protect the heart

  • Be active: about 150 minutes of brisk walking or similar each week, or as your doctor advises
  • Eat more vegetables, fruit, dal and whole grains; cut back on salt, sugar and deep-fried food
  • Do not smoke or chew tobacco
  • Take medicines regularly and keep follow-up visits
