How to Measure Blood Pressure at Home Correctly
Home readings help you and your doctor see how your blood pressure behaves in daily life. Correct technique matters.
Steps
- Use a validated upper-arm monitor with the right cuff size
- Sit quietly for 5 minutes, back supported, feet flat, arm resting at heart level
- Avoid tea, coffee, tobacco and exercise for 30 minutes before
- Take two readings one minute apart, morning and evening
- Write them down and bring the log to your doctor
Understanding the numbers
Repeated readings of 140/90 or higher usually need medical advice. Your doctor will set your own target. Do not change medicines on your own. See high blood pressure: when to see a doctor.
